Landscape Students Place at State Finals
04/03/2017

This has been a busy month with competitions for our students, and they are doing amazing! Earlier in the month, two junior and two senior Landscape Horticulture students competed at the State Finals for the FFA Landscape & Nursery Career Development Event. This event begins in January with an online written test, then the preliminaries in Columbus at the ONLA Midwest Growers Expo and concludes with the top 40 students in the state (top 10 school teams) participating in hands-on skill events for the final. The prelims consist of deciduous tree & shrub id, evergreen tree & shrub id insect id, disease id, turf id, tool id, and reading and interpreting a pesticide/fertilizer/grass seed bag. The Landscape & Nursery CDE is the only event that has been endorsed by an industry certifying organization. In fact, the judges for the skill based finals all come from industry and are each Landscape Industry Certified (National Association of Landscape Professionals). 340 students competed in the Nursery & Landscape Event statewide this year.

This year’s final events included Landscape Maintenance Estimating, Irrigation Timer Programming and Irrigation Lateral Repair, Zero Turn Mower Safety & Operation, Large Walk Behind Mower Safety and Operation,
