12/12 Demo-Dose Medication Dispensing
02/12/2013

Nursing students at Auburn's Practical Nursing Program are using a state of the art medical simulation system. Auburn Career Center is one of a select group of career and technical schools to purchase and offer the use of advanced simulation technology. Research shows medical simulation enhances critical thinking skills and ultimately increases quality care and patient safety by exposing students to low-volume events without endangering actual patients.

"The Demo-Dose Medication Dispensing System provides our students the opportunity to experience firsthand what real patient care is like," said Nursing Program Administrator, Sandy Ranck. Nursing students learn how to dispense practice medications in a secure environment, learn the different types of medications and their uses, learn how to accurately prepare and dispense the medications, and understand the inventory tracking of medications. All nursing students must successfully pass the medication administration testing to meet graduation requirements.

"Auburn's Practical Nursing Program provides one-on-one instructor based education on one of the most advanced medication dispensing systems currently available," said Ranck. Working one-on-one with their classroom instructor, the nursing students are given a scenario or simulated patient to apply the skills they have learned. During the simulated session, the student will receive the patient medications, identify when medications should be administered, learn to retrieve the appropriate medications, and finally administer the medications to a practice classroom mannequin.

The end result... Auburn's Practical Nursing students are receiving a high-quality education which will ultimately prepare them for their future in the field of nursing.
